Dr. Ben Carson is being discriminated against by homosexuals because he stated that he believes marriage is between one man and one woman. He also expressed that no one ought to be able to change that definition:
“Well, my thoughts are that marriage is between a man and a woman. It’s a well-established, fundamental pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA [North American Man/Boy Love Association], be they people who believe in bestiality. It doesn’t matter what they are. They don’t get to change the definition. So he, it’s not something that is against gays, it’s against anybody who wants to come along and change the fundamental definitions of pillars of society. It has significant ramifications.”
So now faculty and students are pushing a petition, asking that he not speak at the commencement of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. They accuse of him “comparing homosexuals to child molesters and bestiality”.
These charges against Dr. Carson are completely false, as he did not make any such contrast and comparison.
The real issue here is that the homosexual population of the nation see themselves as “untouchables”. Hence, since Dr. Ben Carson does not agree with them and publicly expressed it, they concluded that he should not be permitted to speak at the University’s graduation ceremony.
Yet, homosexuals accuse others of “discrimination” against them because of their choice of same sex relationship?
What hypocrisy.
Discrimination refers to the “treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit. Discrimination can be the effect of some law or established practice that confers privileges on a certain class or denies privileges to a certain class because of race, age, sex, nationality, religion, or handicap.”
Federal law, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, prohibits employment discrimination based on any one of those characteristics. Other federal statutes, supplemented by court decisions, prohibit discrimination in voting rights, housing, credit extension, public education, and access to public facilities. State laws also provide further protection against discrimination.
Dr. Carson ought to have the constitutionally protected right to choose to support or not support same sex marriage. Moreover, he ought to have a constitutionally protected right to express his views, without threat of losing a speaking engagement opportunity with a university which is supposed to serve Americans, regardless of age, gender, or sexual preferences.
Dr. Carson should not, in effect, be denied the “privilege” of speaking at the University’s graduation ceremony, solely on the basis of being an advocate of marriage between one man and one woman.
Many homosexuals do not understand that their insistence that Americans not only accept them for who they are, but also endorse their lifestyle decisions, is inviting the very contempt (towards them) they allege is unfair towards them.
However, to his credit, Dr. Carson is not embittered and has not responded to the discrimination with anger. Quite the contrary, he has apologized, if anyone took offense. Additionally, standing by his principles, he has offered clarity of perspective as to what he really meant vs the false propaganda of the left, which sought to malign him and bully him into conformity with same sex marriage.
Dr. Carson has, in fact, offered to withdraw from delivering the commencement speech at the University, out of respect for the University. He put the school’s interest ahead of his own. A true class act.
Nevertheless, it is my sincere hope that John Hopkins will do the right thing and reject notion of discriminating against Dr. Carson for his personal views. Views he has a right to hold and express.
Most importantly, I hope that advocates of same sex marriage come to understand that they are doing far more harm than good for their cause by using slander, intimidation, and bullying tactics against Americans who happen to disagree with their perspectives on same sex marriage.
